What we can confirm

Code CF, from the manufacturer's own documentation

A code is only meaningful together with the machine showing it — the same digits mean different things on different equipment.

The code

CF

The condenser is the coil that throws the heat away, and it needs air moving across it to do that. LG puts a fan there and a sensor on the fan, so when the blade stops — a bearing, a blockage, or something that fell into the machine room — the refrigerator says so rather than quietly getting warmer. What follows if it is left is predictable: the compressor runs longer and longer trying to hold a temperature it cannot reach, the cabinet drifts up a degree at a time, and the electricity bill goes up before the food goes off. In this city the ordinary cause is not the fan. It is what has built up around it, because a machine-room fan in a coastal kitchen pulls in dust, hair and salt air for years.

What it narrows down to

The fan over the condenser has stopped turning, and the machine has noticed

What else belongs to the refrigerators

On this make a code belongs to the appliance rather than to a product line. These are the other conditions this machine can display, and the models that can show this one — a display often has more than one thing to say, and the model number decides what any of it costs to put right.

Other codes this appliance can display

The fan that moves cold around the freezer is not turning

The fan feeding the fresh food side has stopped

The sensor reporting the freezer temperature is not making sense

The fresh food compartment's own sensor is not reporting properly

The sensor that decides when to melt the ice off the coil has failed

The machine cannot read the temperature of the room it is standing in

The fan that carries cold to the ice maker has stopped

The ice maker cannot tell whether the cubes are frozen yet

The ice maker's own motor is not turning the harvest

The internal water tank is missing or not seated

The main board and the display have stopped talking to each other

The refrigerator has found something wrong inside itself and wants a technician

About Refrigerator error code CF

What CF means on this make

The other ways LG prints this one

CF · Er CF · E CF

LG publishes a condition and then every string that can stand for it, and which one your machine shows depends on the panel it was built with — OE, E03 and E21 are one condition on a washer, and Er dS, F dS and r dS are one sensor on different evaporators. They are one page here, so whichever of them you searched for, this is the right page.

Where this appears, and why not to clear it

On the appliance's own display. LG reports errors two ways: machines with a digital display show a code, and the laundry machines without one blink their indicator lights instead. Both are published by the maker and both are on this site. Photograph what the panel shows before cutting the power. On a refrigerator you can also force the last code back onto the display by holding Freezer Temperature and Express Frz together for three seconds — LG documents that, and it is the one thing that makes a first visit more useful. A code that has been reset is information a technician no longer has.

What to do about it

  1. Pull the refrigerator out and take the lower back panel off. Most of these are visible from there — a blade jammed on a wire, or a mat of dust across the coil.
  2. Vacuum the condenser coil and the fan housing properly. Do not just brush the front of it.
  3. Cut the power for five minutes and restore it. A code that clears and stays clear was a blockage; one that comes back is the motor or the board.
  4. If it returns, stop opening the doors more than you must and book the visit — a cabinet running without condenser air is a cabinet losing food.

Where this goes next

The job this usually becomes is diagnostic visit, and that page carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. If it turns out to be nothing — and on this make a real share of these are modes, reminders and settings rather than problems — the visit ends there and you pay the diagnostic and nothing else, or call (305) 419-0291 and describe what the panel is doing before booking anything.
