It depends on the appliance. Inside the fresh food compartment on a refrigerator, usually high on the left or right wall. On the edge of the door on a dishwasher. On the frame inside the door on a wall oven or a range. Behind a filter on a hood. Inside the door frame on a microwave, a washer or a dryer. Behind the grille at the bottom on an undercounter cabinet, and inside the door frame on a wine cellar.

Take a photograph rather than writing it down. The full number includes the letters after the digits — those decide which parts fit, and they are the part people misread most often.

    The most common call on this badge, and the first check is free. An LG refrigerator has a showroom mode that lights the whole panel, runs the fans and cools nothing at all, and it gets switched on at home by accident often enough that we ask about it on the phone before anything else.

  • The upper compartment of a French door refrigerator standing open on limp greens and soft vegetables while the freezer drawer below is pulled out on hard frozen packets.

    Fridge warm and freezer cold

    The combination that rules more out than it rules in. On most LG cabinets one cooling system feeds both compartments and a damper divides the cold between them, so a freezer that is still hard proves the compressor, the gas and the condenser are all doing their job — and moves the whole question to how the cold is getting from one side to the other.

  • A shallow pool of clear water lying in the well under the crisper drawers of a refrigerator, the drawer pulled forward and tipped so the water is visible along the bottom of the compartment.

    Refrigerator leaking water

    Water arrives from two places on this appliance and they are completely different repairs. Melt water that should have gone down a drain and did not, or supply water from the line that feeds the dispenser and the ice maker. Where the puddle is tells you which, and it is worth knowing before anybody is called.

  • An open tub of ice cream gone soft and glossy in a freezer drawer, a spoon standing upright in it, the packets around it slumped rather than rigid.

    Freezer not freezing

    On this make the freezer is a compartment rather than a separate machine, which changes the diagnosis in a useful way: the compartment beside it is a live instrument. A freezer that is failing while the fresh food side holds is telling you something quite different from both of them drifting together, and LG's own codes carry that distinction in their prefix.

  • A thick uneven sheet of white frost grown across the whole back wall of a freezer compartment, the vents behind it almost sealed over, drawers removed and set aside.

    Frost building up in the freezer

    Frost inside a freezer is not a cosmetic problem and it does not stay a small one. A modern cabinet is supposed to melt its own coil clear every few hours; when it stops doing that, the ice grows across the airway until the compartment above it starts to fail. This is the slow failure that people live with for a month and then call about in a hurry.

  • An ice storage bin pulled out of a refrigerator and held level, completely empty, its scoop lying in the bottom, the lit compartment it came out of behind.

    Ice maker not making ice

    The most common call on this badge after cooling itself, and the one where the useful question is not about the ice maker at all. Does the water dispenser still work? That single answer splits the problem in half before anybody opens anything, because ice and water share a supply and part company inside the door.

Is a twenty-year-old unit still worth repairing?

Usually, yes. These were built to be repaired, and a legacy cabinet in good condition with sound cabinetry is worth keeping. Where it stops being worth it is when the work approaches what the unit is worth, or when a second major failure is already visible — and we will say so on the visit rather than after.

Can you still get parts for the older units?

For most of what fails, yes — OEM parts are available on order, though legacy parts can take a few days to source. That is why we confirm a part is the problem before ordering it rather than after.

Why do you not list the specifications for each model?

Because we cannot verify them. Capacity, dimensions and production years published second-hand are wrong often enough that a table of them would be a liability, and inventing one would break our own rule about publishing only what we can stand behind. What we do publish is what the number means for the repair.

The number on my unit has letters after it. Does that matter?

Yes, for parts. The digits identify the family; the letters identify the configuration, and two units sharing the same digits can take different components. Photograph the whole plate and we will read it from there.
