How Long an LG Refrigerator Water Filter Really Lasts in South Florida
LG rates most of its refrigerator filters at six months or about two hundred gallons, whichever comes first, and in South Florida the gallons usually run out before the months do. Hard water and sediment both load a cartridge faster than the rating assumes, and a household that fills bottles from the dispenser rather than the tap can reach two hundred gallons well inside four months. What happens if you leave it is not that the water becomes unsafe — it is that flow drops, and the first thing to suffer is the ice maker, because it needs a full tray filled within a time limit and a restricted filter cannot deliver it. That is why no ice with working water so often turns out to be a filter nobody changed. After a change, expect air in the line: run four or five liters through the dispenser until it stops spitting, and give the ice maker twenty-four hours before judging it.

How long does LG refrigerator water filter last? The label says six months
LG rates most of its refrigerator water filters at six months or about two hundred gallons, whichever comes first — and in South Florida the gallons tend to run out well before the months do.
Two reasons. The water here carries more hardness and more sediment than the rating assumes, so a cartridge loads faster. And households that use the dispenser as their drinking water — filling bottles rather than running the tap — get through two hundred gallons a great deal quicker than a household that uses it for the occasional glass.
A realistic interval for a family of four that drinks from the door is closer to four months. For a couple who use it lightly, six is fine.
What actually goes wrong if you leave it
Not what most people assume. A loaded carbon filter stops improving the water; it does not start spoiling it. The water does not become unsafe.
What happens instead is that flow drops, and the first thing to suffer is the ice maker.
The ice maker has to fill its tray within a time limit. If the water arrives too slowly, the tray fills short — which gives you hollow, small or misshapen cubes — and eventually it does not fill at all, and the machine stops making ice while the dispenser still works well enough that nobody suspects the filter.
That is why *no ice with working water* so often turns out to be a filter nobody has changed. It is the cheapest thing on the whole diagnostic list and it is checked first for exactly that reason.
After the change: the air
Expect it. A new cartridge has air in it and air in the line behind it, and the machine will not fill a tray it cannot fill cleanly.
Run four or five liters through the dispenser into a jug until it stops spitting and the flow is smooth. Then leave the ice maker alone for twenty-four hours before deciding anything — an ice maker produces on the order of two to three pounds a day, so nothing is judged in the driveway.
If there is still no ice after a full day, and the water is running normally, then it is worth looking further: a fill tube frozen at the mouth, or the compartment not staying cold enough. LG codes those last two as IF and IS.
The leak that gets blamed on something else
A cartridge that is not turned fully home — a few millimeters short of its stop — weeps. Slowly, and often only when the dispenser is used, which is why the timing gets missed and the water gets blamed on the defrost drain for months.
When you fit a new one, turn it firmly to the stop and then run the dispenser for thirty seconds while looking at the housing with a torch. Thirty seconds of checking saves a very annoying investigation later.
Third-party cartridges
Certified ones exist and many are perfectly good. The problem we see is not filtration — it is sealing. A cartridge whose O-rings are marginally the wrong size fits, turns, and weeps.
If you use a third-party filter and something starts leaking, take the filter out of the equation before assuming anything else: fit a known-good cartridge and watch the housing for a day.
Two other water jobs worth doing at the same time
The tank, where the model has one. Some LG cabinets hold a water tank inside the fresh food compartment rather than running the dispenser straight off the line. It comes out to be washed, and it goes back with a firm push — LG codes a tank that is missing or unseated as tt, and a tank put back a few millimeters short produces that with nothing broken.
The supply line. Have a look behind the machine once a year. A saddle valve that has been weeping onto a floor for a year is a much larger repair than the one it started as.
If it turns out to be a repair
What this leads to, and what it costs
Every job on this site is priced the same way: an on-site diagnostic first, the figure agreed in writing before anybody starts.
-
Water dispenser and filter service
The cheapest refrigeration row on this site and the one most often mistaken for something larger. Between the mains and the glass there is a valve, a filter, a tank on some models, a line, and a dispenser switch — and any of them will produce no water, slow water, or a leak that gets blamed on the defrost drain.
- Filter, housing, tank, line and valve, in that order
- A cartridge a few millimeters proud weeps steadily and is missed for months
- Air in the line after a change is normal and clears itself
-
Ice maker not making ice
The most common call on this badge after cooling itself, and the one where the useful question is not about the ice maker at all. Does the water dispenser still work? That single answer splits the problem in half before anybody opens anything, because ice and water share a supply and part company inside the door.
- Water working and ice not moves the whole question inside the compartment
- IF, IS and It are published — fan, sensor and motor
- A fill tube frozen at the mouth is common here and free to clear
-
Refrigerator error code tt
LG refrigerator error code tt: Some LG cabinets hold a water tank inside the fresh food compartment rather than running the dispenser straight off the line, and this code says the machine cannot find it or cannot see it properly in place. Every spelling LG publishes for it, which machines can raise it, and what to do next.
What this one means
Questions people ask about this
Do I have to use an LG filter?
You do not have to, and there is a real difference in outcomes. Certified third-party cartridges exist and many are fine; uncertified ones vary enormously, and the failure mode we see most is not poor filtration but poor sealing — a cartridge whose O-rings are slightly wrong weeps into the compartment and gets blamed on the defrost drain for months.
What actually happens if I never change it?
Flow drops steadily, and the ice maker is the first casualty because it has to fill a tray within a time limit. After that the dispenser slows. The water does not become dangerous — a loaded carbon filter stops improving the water rather than starting to spoil it — but the appliance behaves as though something has broken.
There is no ice since I changed the filter.
Very common and usually not a repair. A new cartridge puts air into the line and the machine will not fill a tray it cannot fill cleanly. Run four or five liters through the water dispenser until it stops spitting, confirm the cartridge is turned fully home, and wait twenty-four hours.
Can filters be recycled?
Not through ordinary kerbside recycling — the housing is a mixed plastic with carbon and sometimes a membrane inside. Some manufacturers run mail-back programs and some retailers accept them. It is worth asking rather than assuming, but it is not a household recycling item.
