Symptom

LG ice maker frozen into a block

A bucket of ice that has fused into a single lump is not the ice maker failing to work — it is ice sitting still for long enough to weld itself together, usually because the compartment is going through small warm-up cycles it should not, or because nobody has used any ice for a fortnight.

Four ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Take the bucket out and thaw it in the sink

Never with a knife or a screwdriver — the auger and the bucket walls damage easily and the repair is more than the ice is worth.

  2. 02

Check the door closes squarely on a strip of paper

All the way round, including the bottom corner, which is where a dropped door shows first.

  3. 03

Note how long since anyone took ice

Two weeks of no use in a machine that makes ice slowly explains this entirely.

  4. 04

Look for frost elsewhere in the freezer

If there is a wall of it behind the back panel, this is a defrost call rather than an ice call.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Ice that partly melts and refreezes bonds into a solid mass”
  • “A door left ajar, a failing seal, or a defrost problem all do it”
  • “Clearing it is easy; the reason it happened is the actual question”
A calculator and a spiral notepad lying on a dark counter, a pen across the pad, nothing written.

About LG ice maker frozen into a block

Clear it, then ask why

Take the bucket out and let it thaw in the sink — not with a knife, and not with hot water into the compartment. That part is easy. The question worth answering is why it happened, because ice only fuses when it has partly melted, and something is warming that compartment: a door that is not sealing, a gasket that has gone hard, an in-door ice maker whose fan has stopped, or a defrost cycle running longer than it should.

What it usually means, by the kind of LG appliance

LG sells one appliance in several forms — five shapes of washer, three kinds of dryer, four fuels of range — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • French door with in-door ice — The most affected layout, because the ice sits in the door where the temperature swings most every time it opens.
  • Side-by-side — The ice sits deeper in the cold, so a solid block here is more likely to mean low usage than a temperature problem.
  • Craft Ice models — The round ice unit makes slowly by design, so its store sits longer and fuses sooner. Not a failure by itself.

Why ice fuses

Cubes touching each other at a steady temperature stay separate indefinitely. What bonds them is a cycle: the surface melts a little, the water runs into the gaps, and it refreezes as a single crystal. That means a solid block is always evidence of warming, and in a working freezer the only sources of warming are the door, a defrost that is running too long, and cold that has stopped arriving.

The other reason, which is not a repair

Ice that nobody uses will do this anyway over enough weeks, because every normal defrost cycle warms the compartment slightly. A household that makes ice constantly never sees it; one that opens the bucket at Christmas sees it every year. If the machine is otherwise holding temperature and the seal is good, that is the answer and there is nothing to fix.

Questions about LG ice maker frozen into a block

Can I break it up with something?

Please do not use anything metal. The bucket has an auger in the bottom driven by a motor in the cabinet, and a screwdriver through a block of ice ends up against that auger. Take the whole bucket out, let it thaw in a sink, dry it, and put it back.

It keeps happening every few weeks.

Then something is warming the compartment repeatedly and it is worth finding. Start with the door seal and whether the door is being held ajar by a bin or a bottle. After that, an in-door ice maker with a failing fan will do it reliably, and LG codes that as IF.
