LG ice maker repair

LG's ice makers live inside the refrigerator — in the door, in the freezer, or as the second unit that makes round Craft Ice — and it publishes three codes for them: IF for the fan that carries cold, IS for the sensor that decides the cubes are frozen, and It for the motor that harvests them. Between them those three cover air, cold and mechanism.

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

Split it with the water dispenser

Water working and no ice moves the whole question inside the compartment. That is ten seconds of diagnosis.

  2. 02

Look in the bay with a torch

Full tray, empty bucket, frost around the fan — each of the three says something different.

  3. 03

    Rule out the fill side

A frozen fill tube, air after a filter change, or a valve that is not opening fully. None of them shows a code.

  4. 04

    Test the module

The motor, the sensor and the heater in the tray, measured rather than swapped.

  5. 05

Give it a day before closing

An ice maker takes hours to produce anything. The job is verified the next day, not in the driveway.

    LG refrigerator repair in Miami

Three hundred and forty-seven of them are in LG's US catalog, which makes this the biggest part of what the badge sells and the biggest part of what we are called out for. LG is also the make that tells you most about itself when something goes wrong: the refrigerator carries a published code for the condenser fan, the freezer fan, the refrigerator fan, three separate sensors and the ice maker, and you can force it to show you the last one by holding two buttons. In a South Florida kitchen most of the calls are not the sealed system. They are ice, water, a fan that iced up behind the back wall, or a door that stopped sealing in air that is wet nine months of the year.

LG ice maker repair in Miami

LG does not sell an undercounter ice machine in this country. Its ice makers live inside the refrigerator — in the door, in the freezer compartment, or as the second unit that makes the round Craft Ice — and its accessory catalog carries automatic ice maker kits for cabinets that shipped without one. That is where the calls come from, and LG publishes three codes for it: IF for the ice maker fan, IS for its temperature sensor and It for its motor. Ice is the single most common thing we are asked about on this badge, and it is rarely the ice maker.

    • Ice makers in the door, in the freezer, and the second unit that makes Craft Ice
    • IF, IS and It are published — fan, sensor and motor, each named
    • A filter change and a slow fill line explain most of the no-ice calls

About LG ice maker repair

Slow ice is usually a cold problem, not an ice maker problem

An ice maker is a tray, a sensor and a motor waiting on cold air, so a great many calls that begin with a broken ice maker end somewhere else entirely. A freezer that has drifted several degrees above where it should be will still keep food frozen and will not fill a bin at anything like a normal rate. The round-ice unit on the cabinets that have one is slower than the main tray by design and always will be. And a household that has doubled for the holidays is asking for more than any home machine makes in a day. The compartment temperature and the fill get checked before the module comes out.

Questions about LG ice maker repair

How much should it make in a day?

It varies by cabinet, and the number in the manual assumes a closed door and full water pressure. Half of what the book says with a freezer that measures correctly is worth a visit; a quarter of it means something has stopped.

The ice tastes bad. Is that this repair?

Usually not. It is the filter, the water line, or a bin of old cubes that has spent a year absorbing the freezer around it. Empty the bin, change the filter, and give it two days before you decide.

Tell us the model number and what it is doing.
