What It Costs to Fix an LG Refrigerator, Job by Job
A refrigerator that is not cooling is not one repair with one price — it is five, and they run from a condenser cleaning starting at $125 through an air or defrost repair starting at $155 to a sealed system job starting at $595. Which one you have is decided by the diagnostic, not by the description, because all five look identical from the kitchen. The compressor question deserves a separate answer on this make: LG's refrigerator compressors carry a long parts warranty that follows the machine rather than the owner, so a cabinet that changed hands, or that came with a house, may still be covered when its owner has no idea. That is why the warranty position is established before any sealed-system work is quoted and never after — it is the difference between a large repair and a part supplied at no cost with labor to pay. Every figure here is a from, confirmed on site after the diagnostic.
The full guide
How much does a fridge compressor repair cost? One complaint, five prices
*The fridge is not cold.*
That sentence covers at least five different repairs, and the gap between the cheapest and the dearest is about five times.
Here is the ladder, in the order it is actually worked through:
| what it turns out to be | from |
|---|---|
| a condenser nobody has ever cleaned | $125 |
| an air or defrost problem — fan, heater, sensor, damper | $155 |
| water where it should not be — drain, pan, line, filter housing | $145 |
| a control or a board | *quoted after diagnosis* |
| the sealed refrigerant system — leak or compressor | $595 |
From the kitchen, the first and the last are the same story. The box is warm, the light is on, and it hums. That is the entire reason the diagnostic exists and the reason no honest quote happens on the phone.
The compressor question
This is the one everybody asks, and on LG it has an answer most people do not expect.
LG's refrigerator compressors carry a long parts warranty, and it follows the machine rather than the owner.
Read that twice, because it is unusual. It means a cabinet that came with a house you bought, or that was inherited, or that has changed hands twice, may still be covered — with no receipt, no registration and an owner who has never heard of it.
We see this go wrong in one specific way: somebody is quoted for a sealed system job, pays for it or declines it and replaces the machine, and only afterwards discovers the part was covered all along.
So the order is fixed. The warranty position is established before the sealed system work is quoted, never after. It takes the model and serial number off the plate inside the fresh food compartment and a check with LG, and it can change the number enough to change the decision.
What the sealed system job actually is
Worth understanding, because the price surprises people who have just paid $155 for a fan.
Opening the refrigerant loop means recovering what is in it, brazing the repair, fitting a new filter drier, pulling a deep vacuum to remove every trace of moisture — which matters more here than almost anywhere, because the air we work in is full of it — and weighing in an exact charge.
It needs certification, it needs equipment, and it needs the time it needs. A sealed system job done fast is a sealed system job done twice.
Where the repair-or-replace line sits
There is no formula, but there are three honest questions.
How old is the cabinet? Under about seven years, most repairs on the list above are worth doing. Approaching twelve, a sealed system repair on an uncovered machine is usually not.
Is the compressor covered? If it is, the arithmetic moves a long way toward repair even on an older machine.
What is it worth to you? A built-in cabinet integrated into cabinetry is not comparable with a freestanding one — replacing it is a joinery project, not a delivery, and that changes what a $595 repair is worth.
The cheapest possible answer
Before any of this: when was the condenser last cleaned?
If the answer is *never*, and the machine is a few years old, and it lives in a kitchen with a shedding pet, then there is a real chance the whole problem is a coil under a blanket of hair — and that is a $125 visit that also prevents the $595 one.
Nothing on the appliance reports it. That is why it is checked first and why it is so often the answer.
If it turns out to be a repair
What this leads to, and what it costs
Every job on this site is priced the same way: an on-site diagnostic first, the figure agreed in writing before anybody starts.

from $155 Refrigerator not cooling repair cost
What refrigerator not cooling repair costs on an LG in South Florida, from $155, and what moves that number. No final price is published anywhere on this site: the figure is confirmed on site after the diagnostic and agreed in writing before anything is opened.
- from $155, and what changes it
- Confirmed on site, agreed in writing
- Nothing is opened or ordered before you have said yes
-
from $595 Sealed system repair
Real, uncommon, and last. It is the only refrigeration repair that needs gauges, recovery, brazing and a vacuum, and it is the only one where the number is large. On this make there is a second reason to be careful before it is quoted: LG's linear compressors carry a long parts warranty that follows the machine rather than the owner.
- Diagnosed with gauges, never from a symptom or a code
- The compressor warranty position is established before any figure is given
- Recovery, drier, vacuum and charge — the whole procedure or none of it
Questions people ask about this
Is a compressor repair worth doing?
It depends almost entirely on the warranty position and the age of the cabinet. Inside the compressor warranty the part itself may cost nothing and you are paying for the recovery, brazing, drier, vacuum, charge and labor — which is a real number but a very different one. Outside it, on a cabinet approaching ten years, the honest conversation is often about replacement instead, and we would rather have that conversation than sell the repair.
How do I find out whether mine is covered?
It turns on the model and serial number and the manufacture date on the plate inside the fresh food compartment, and on LG's own terms for that model — not on who bought it or whether the receipt still exists, which is what makes this unusual. We check it before quoting sealed-system work. You can also check it yourself with LG before calling anybody, and it is worth doing.
Why is the sealed system so much more than the other repairs?
Because it is a different kind of work. Opening the refrigerant loop means recovering the existing charge, brazing, fitting a new filter drier, pulling a deep vacuum to get every trace of moisture out — which matters enormously in this climate — and weighing in an exact charge. It needs certification, equipment and time, and a job done quickly is a job that fails again.
Could the whole thing just be a dirty condenser?
It genuinely could, and it is checked first because it is the cheapest possibility on the list. Nothing on the machine reports a dirty coil — there is a code for the fan over it and none for the coil itself — so a cabinet that has been strangling for years looks perfectly healthy on the display until the day it does not.
