LG sealed system repair

Real, uncommon, and last. It is the only refrigeration repair that needs gauges, recovery, brazing and a vacuum, and it is the only one where the number is large. On this make there is a second reason to be careful before it is quoted: LG's linear compressors carry a long parts warranty that follows the machine rather than the owner.

  • From $95 diagnostic, credited to the repair
  • 59 cities and neighborhoods covered
  • OEM parts available on order

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

Prove it is the sealed system

Air and defrost ruled out first, with numbers. Most cabinets sent for a compressor did not need one.

  2. 02

    Check the warranty

LG's compressor cover follows the machine. A cabinet bought used can still be covered, and it changes the number considerably.

  3. 03

    Recover properly

Refrigerant is recovered, not vented. This is not negotiable and it is not optional.

  4. 04

Braze, replace the drier, pull a vacuum

A system opened to atmosphere in Miami has taken on moisture. Skipping the drier or the vacuum is how a repair fails in six months.

  5. 05

    Weigh the charge in

By weight, to the plate. Not by gauge pressure and not by feel.

    LG refrigerator repair in Miami

Three hundred and forty-seven of them are in LG's US catalog, which makes this the biggest part of what the badge sells and the biggest part of what we are called out for. LG is also the make that tells you most about itself when something goes wrong: the refrigerator carries a published code for the condenser fan, the freezer fan, the refrigerator fan, three separate sensors and the ice maker, and you can force it to show you the last one by holding two buttons. In a South Florida kitchen most of the calls are not the sealed system. They are ice, water, a fan that iced up behind the back wall, or a door that stopped sealing in air that is wet nine months of the year.

    LG freezer repair in Miami

LG does not sell a standalone upright freezer in this country — its freezers are the compartment: the bottom drawer of a French door, the bottom of a bottom-freezer cabinet, the tall left side of a side-by-side, or the top of a top-freezer. That is worth saying plainly, because it decides what a failure means. A freezer that is not holding on an LG is a refrigerator failure with its own published codes — FF for the freezer fan, FS for the freezer sensor, dS for the defrost sensor — and the compartment beside it is usually the evidence.

    • The freezer is a compartment on this make, not a separate machine
    • FF, FS and dS are published codes and each names a different part
    • Frost on the back wall is a symptom of defrost, not of the door

  • the ice storage bin lifted out of its compartment — LG's ice maker lives inside the refrigerator, so the bin is the honest subject rather than an undercounter machine

LG ice maker repair in Miami

LG does not sell an undercounter ice machine in this country. Its ice makers live inside the refrigerator — in the door, in the freezer compartment, or as the second unit that makes the round Craft Ice — and its accessory catalog carries automatic ice maker kits for cabinets that shipped without one. That is where the calls come from, and LG publishes three codes for it: IF for the ice maker fan, IS for its temperature sensor and It for its motor. Ice is the single most common thing we are asked about on this badge, and it is rarely the ice maker.

    • Ice makers in the door, in the freezer, and the second unit that makes Craft Ice
    • IF, IS and It are published — fan, sensor and motor, each named
    • A filter change and a slow fill line explain most of the no-ice calls

LG wine cooler repair in Miami

This is the narrowest page on the site, and it should be: LG's US catalog lists one wine cellar, a SIGNATURE machine, alongside the wine storage built into some of its four-door refrigerators. A wine cabinet is a refrigerator with a much narrower brief — it holds a temperature band rather than a temperature, and it is judged on how still it keeps the bottle as much as how cold. The failures follow from that: compressor cycling, a door seal, a fan, and the sensors that decide when any of it runs.

    • One SIGNATURE wine cellar in the catalog, plus in-cabinet wine storage
    • Judged on a stable band and on vibration, not on how cold it gets
    • The same sensors and fans as the refrigerators, with tighter tolerances

About LG sealed system repair

What to establish before anyone quotes you a compressor

Three questions, in this order. Has the air side actually been ruled out — fans, defrost, a coil packed with dust — because most cabinets sent for a compressor never needed one. Has anyone put gauges on the machine, or is the diagnosis a guess wearing a confident face. And what is the manufacture date on the sticker inside the door, because LG's linear compressors carry an unusually long parts coverage that follows the machine rather than the person who bought it. We look that up before a number is written down, and it has ended the conversation in the owner's favor more than once.

Questions about LG sealed system repair

Is it ever worth doing on an older machine?

This is the one repair on this site where the honest answer is sometimes no, and we will say so. A twelve-year-old cabinet with a tired gasket and a slow ice maker is a poor place to spend that money. A four-year-old French door with a covered compressor usually is not.

How long does it take?

A day at the machine when the parts are on the truck, and it cannot be hurried. Recovery, brazing, a new drier, a proper vacuum and a weighed charge each take the time they take, and a cabinet rushed through that stage is a cabinet we would be back at.
