What an Appliance Service Call Costs in South Florida, and What You Get for It

A diagnostic visit in Miami-Dade and Broward starts at $95, and on this make it buys more than a look: LG machines keep a report of themselves — the code on the display, the blinking-light pattern, or the code that has to be forced onto the display by holding two buttons — and reading that is real information that disappears the moment anybody unplugs the machine. That fee is normally credited against the repair when the work goes ahead on the same visit, which means the diagnostic is effectively free on a job you approve and is only a cost on a job you decline. What nobody can honestly do is quote the repair itself over the phone before that. The same complaint — a refrigerator that is not cooling — spans a repair starting at $155 and a sealed system job starting at $595, and no description of the noise it makes distinguishes them. Every figure published on this site is a from: a floor, confirmed on site before any work begins.

The full guide

How much does a appliance repair cost: the number, first

A diagnostic visit starts at $95 in Miami-Dade and Broward. That is the market rate for a first visit and it is what this site publishes.

A planned maintenance visit — condenser, filters, seals, drain, levels, on a machine that is working — starts at $125 and is priced on time.

Everything else on this site is published the same way: as a from. A floor, not a final price, and confirmed on site before any work begins.

What a service call fee is, and the three ways the same money gets arranged Top: a trip charge pays for getting a technician and a stocked van to the address; a diagnostic fee pays for finding out what is wrong; service call fee is used to mean either or both, so it is worth asking which. Below: three bars of identical total width. With a stated fee credited toward the repair, the visit and the repair are two visible numbers. With no diagnostic fee, the total is the same and the visit is inside the repair price. With a fee that is free only if you go ahead, it is a fee with an incentive attached. One question settles all three: if I decline the repair, what do I owe you. THREE NAMES, TWO DIFFERENT THINGS TRIP CHARGE getting a van here DIAGNOSTIC FEE finding out what is wrong SERVICE CALL FEE means either — or both. Ask which. THE SAME MONEY, ARRANGED THREE WAYS STATED FEE, CREDITED two numbers, both visible THE VISIT THE REPAIR “NO DIAGNOSTIC FEE” one number — the visit is inside it THE REPAIR — WITH THE VISIT IN IT FREE IF YOU GO AHEAD a fee, with an incentive attached to the diagnosis THE VISIT THE REPAIR free if you go ahead · charged if you decline all three bars are the same total — that is the point “If I decline, what do I owe you?” one question settles all three · ask before you book
A free diagnostic is not less money — it is the same money with one of the two numbers folded into the other. That is legitimate, and it is why comparing quotes on the headline figure does not work.

What the diagnostic actually buys on this make

More than a look at the machine, and this is specific to LG.

These appliances keep a report of themselves. Sometimes that is a code sitting on the display. Sometimes it is a pattern of blinking lights on a machine with no display at all. And on several machines the stored code has to be forced onto the display by holding two buttons in a particular way — information that is genuinely there and that nobody sees by looking.

Reading that is the first thing that happens on the visit, and it is why the order of operations matters: it is lost the moment anybody resets the appliance. Unplugging the machine for ten minutes is the standard household first move and it very often erases the most useful thing in the room.

Why it is credited

Because otherwise the incentive is wrong.

When the repair goes ahead on the same visit, the diagnostic is credited against the work. That means on a job you approve the diagnosis effectively costs nothing, and the only time you pay for it alone is when you decide not to repair the machine.

Which is often a perfectly good outcome. Knowing that a nine-year-old washer needs a drive repair starting at $345 is what makes the replace-or-repair decision straightforward instead of agonizing.

Why the phone number is a guess

Take the most common call we get: *the refrigerator is not cooling.*

That complaint spans, at least:

  • a condenser that has never been cleaned — from $125
  • an air or defrost problem — from $155
  • a compressor or a leak in the sealed loop — from $595

From the kitchen these are the same story. The box is warm, the light is on, and it hums or it does not. Nothing you can tell us on the phone reliably separates them, and no honest person can price them sight unseen.

There is one thing that shifts this on LG specifically: the compressor warranty follows the machine rather than the owner, and it runs long. If your cabinet is still inside it, the sealed system conversation changes completely — which is why the warranty position gets established *before* anybody quotes that work, never after.

What to have ready

Three things, and they genuinely shorten the visit.

The model number. On the plate — inside the fresh food compartment on a refrigerator, on the door frame or under the lid on a washer, on the door edge or the drawer rim on a dishwasher.

The exact code. Character for character. lE and 1E are different codes on this make and they are not the same problem; on a small display they look nearly identical. If there is no code but a light pattern, count the blinks and note which lights.

What changed. A storm, a power cut, a new filter, a house move, a plumber under the sink last week. On an intermittent problem that sentence is frequently worth more than the code.

And what the fee is not

It is not a call-out charge you pay on top of the same amount again when the technician returns with a part. Where a part has to be ordered, the diagnostic is paid once, at the first visit, and the return is part of the job.

If anybody in this trade tells you otherwise, ask them to say it twice.

If it turns out to be a repair

Every job on this site is priced the same way: an on-site diagnostic first, the figure agreed in writing before anybody starts.

  • A multimeter and a small open notebook with a pen lying on a dark quartz counter beside an appliance whose panel is dark, a hand writing.
    from $95

    Diagnostic visit

One visit, one technician, one answer in writing. On this make the diagnostic starts with something most makes cannot offer: the appliance usually has something to say. LG publishes code lists for its refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers and ranges, and on the machines with no display it publishes what the blinking lights mean instead. Reading that properly is half the job and it costs nothing to do.

    • The model number and whatever the appliance is reporting, read before anything is opened
    • Blinking-light patterns included, because LG documents them and that makes them codes
    • Written findings and a from-price before any part is ordered
    What this involves
  • A rolled tool mat opened on a dark tile floor in front of a refrigerator pulled out from the wall, a torch, a brush, a vacuum crevice tool and a meter laid out on it in a row.
    from $125

    Appliance maintenance cost

What appliance maintenance costs on an LG in South Florida, from $125, and what moves that number. No final price is published anywhere on this site: the figure is confirmed on site after the diagnostic and agreed in writing before anything is opened.

Questions people ask about this

Why can't you tell me the price on the phone?

Because the same complaint covers very different jobs. A refrigerator that is not cooling can be a fan or a defrost part, starting at $155, or a sealed system repair starting at $595 — and those are the same story from the kitchen. Anybody who names a firm number before seeing the machine is either quoting the cheap outcome to get the visit or the expensive one to be safe. Neither is a price.

Is the diagnostic fee wasted if I decide not to repair it?

It is what you paid for the answer, and often the answer is worth having on its own: knowing that a nine-year-old machine needs a sealed system repair is what turns a difficult decision into an easy one. When the work goes ahead the fee is credited, so on an approved job it costs nothing.

What should I have ready when I call?

The model number from the plate — inside the door on a refrigerator, on the door frame or under the lid on a washer, on the door edge or the drawer rim on a dishwasher — and the exact code, character for character. lE and 1E are different codes and mean different things. If there is no code but a light pattern, count the blinks. That is diagnosis before we arrive.

Should I reset the machine before you come?

Ideally not. A reset clears the stored history along with the code, and on an intermittent problem that history is the most valuable thing in the appliance. If it has already been reset it is not a disaster — it just means we may have to reproduce the condition rather than read it.
