What we can confirm

Code E1, from the manufacturer's own documentation

A code is only meaningful together with the machine showing it — the same digits mean different things on different equipment.

The code

E1

Only the steam models carry these. Add is a prompt rather than an error — the reservoir needs filling — while E1 and E4 report a problem in the steam circuit itself: the supply, the valve or the sensing. Everything except the steam programs keeps working, so this is a repair to book rather than a machine to stop using.

What it narrows down to

A machine with a steam cycle cannot get the water it needs

What else belongs to the dryers

On this make a code belongs to the appliance rather than to a product line. These are the other conditions this machine can display, and the models that can show this one — a display often has more than one thing to say, and the model number decides what any of it costs to put right.

Other codes this appliance can display

The cycle was interrupted by the power going away

Not an error — the panel is locked

The machine has no numbers to show you, so it reports by which lights blink

The sensor that measures the dryer's heat is out of range

The machine is tumbling but no power is reaching the heat

The machine cannot confirm the door is closed

The drum is not turning when the machine asks it to

The machine is measuring how blocked its own exhaust is, and reporting a percentage

A ventless dryer cannot get rid of the water it has taken out of the load

The sensor that decides when the load is dry is not reporting

The dryer reports by which indicator lights blink rather than by a number

About Dryer error code E1

What E1 means on this make

Only the steam models carry these. Add is a prompt rather than an error — the reservoir needs filling — while E1 and E4 report a problem in the steam circuit itself: the supply, the valve or the sensing. Everything except the steam programs keeps working, so this is a repair to book rather than a machine to stop using.

The other ways LG prints this one

E1 · E4 · Add

LG publishes a condition and then every string that can stand for it, and which one your machine shows depends on the panel it was built with — OE, E03 and E21 are one condition on a washer, and Er dS, F dS and r dS are one sensor on different evaporators. They are one page here, so whichever of them you searched for, this is the right page.

Where this appears, and why not to clear it

On the appliance's own display. LG reports errors two ways: machines with a digital display show a code, and the laundry machines without one blink their indicator lights instead. Both are published by the maker and both are on this site. Photograph what the panel shows before cutting the power. On a refrigerator you can also force the last code back onto the display by holding Freezer Temperature and Express Frz together for three seconds — LG documents that, and it is the one thing that makes a first visit more useful. A code that has been reset is information a technician no longer has.

What to do about it

  1. If the display says Add, fill the steam reservoir and carry on.
  2. If the machine is plumbed for steam, check the supply tap and the hose.
  3. Run a non-steam cycle to confirm the rest of the machine is fine.
  4. Book it if E1 or E4 stays.

Where this goes next

The job this usually becomes is diagnostic visit, and that page carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. If it turns out to be nothing — and on this make a real share of these are modes, reminders and settings rather than problems — the visit ends there and you pay the diagnostic and nothing else, or call (305) 419-0291 and describe what the panel is doing before booking anything.
