- “A swing that returns to the same middle is normal; a middle that moves is not”
- “Vibration is part of the specification on this appliance, not a cosmetic issue”
- “Mechanically it is a refrigerator, so the same fans, sensors and sealed system apply”
Symptom
LG wine cooler not holding temperature
A wine cabinet is judged differently from a refrigerator. It is not asked to be cold; it is asked to hold a narrow band steadily and to leave the bottle undisturbed while it does. So the two complaints on this appliance are drift and vibration, and neither is quite what a kitchen refrigerator call sounds like.

Four ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The condenser fan or a blocked coil
A wine cabinet is often built in, and built-in means restricted airflow at the back. CF is the code.
Condenser cleaning service from $125 -
A door seal
Glass doors are heavier and hinge wear shows sooner. A seal that lets warm air in defeats the whole appliance.
Door seal replacement from $145 -
The temperature sensor
The tolerance here is tighter than a kitchen cabinet, so a sensor that would pass elsewhere does not pass here.
Temperature sensor replacement from $155 -
Compressor mounts and vibration
Hardened grommets, a fouled fan bearing, or a cabinet leveled onto a tile lip.
Sealed system repair from $595

01
Put a probe on the middle shelf
Not on the top, not against the back, and not the display.
-
02
Read it over a full day
Wine cabinets cycle slowly. An hour tells you nothing.
-
03
Check the clearance behind and above
Built-in cabinets need their vent path clear. A towel over the grille will do this.
-
04
Listen for a new hum
On this appliance a hum that was not there before is a finding rather than a nuisance.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all
The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About LG wine cooler not holding temperature
Measure at the shelf, over a day
Do not judge this by the display. Put a probe thermometer on the middle shelf and read it three or four times across twenty-four hours, noting what the door has been doing in between. A cabinet that cycles two degrees either side of the same middle is behaving. A cabinet whose middle keeps landing higher each time is drifting, and that is the version worth calling about.
What it usually means, by the kind of LG appliance
LG sells one appliance in several forms — five shapes of washer, three kinds of dryer, four fuels of range — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.
- LG SIGNATURE wine cellar — The one dedicated machine in LG's US catalog. Compressor, fans, sensors and sealed system as a refrigerator, with a tighter tolerance.
- Wine storage in a four-door refrigerator — A compartment of a larger cabinet, so a wine problem here is usually a damper or a duct rather than a system.
- Cabinets used for wine — Plenty of people store bottles in an ordinary LG cabinet. It works, and the tolerance question below still applies.
What a wine cabinet is actually for
Two things: a stable temperature and stillness. Wine is damaged less by being slightly warm than by being moved between temperatures, and vibration accelerates chemical change in the bottle. That is why the specification for this appliance is a narrow band held steadily rather than a low number, and why a hum that nobody would notice on a kitchen refrigerator is a genuine defect here.
Repaired like a refrigerator, judged like a cellar
Everything mechanical is shared — the compressor, the condenser, the fans, the sensors, the sealed system and the diagnostics. What differs is when the job is finished. A refrigerator holding within a couple of degrees is right; a wine cabinet doing the same thing across its shelves may still be wrong for the person storing bottles in it, and we do not close the job until the band is where it should be.

Questions about LG wine cooler not holding temperature
The two zones read differently. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily — a dual-zone cabinet is meant to hold different bands, typically reds warmer than whites, and a difference of ten degrees between them is the design working. What is not right is a zone that will not reach its set point at all, or two zones that have converged on the same number.
It is fine in winter and drifts in summer.
That is nearly always airflow rather than the sealed system. A built-in cabinet in a hot kitchen has to shed its heat into that kitchen, and if the vent path at the plinth or the top is restricted it copes in February and does not in August. Clearing the coil and the vent path is the first repair.
