Symptom

LG oven temperature is wrong

There are three quite different things behind this and they need different answers: an oven that is out by a consistent amount, an oven that swings, and an oven that is fine but is being judged by a thermometer that is not. Establishing which one you have is most of the job.

Four ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Use a real oven thermometer

Middle shelf, middle of the oven, thirty minutes. Anything less is guessing.

  2. 02

Check the door seal by eye

Look along the gasket for flat spots and gaps, and check the door sits square against the frame.

  3. 03

Note whether it is wrong or unsteady

A steady error and a swinging one are different repairs.

  4. 04

Try both cavities on a double oven

If one is right, the supply and the board are fine and it is that cavity's sensor.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Consistently out is calibration; swinging is the sensor”
  • “Measure at the middle shelf, not at the door and not by eye”
  • “Most of these can be offset from the panel without any parts”
A phone and a set of keys lying on a narrow console table by a front door in the evening, one lamp above them.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

On a range, the data plate is behind the kick panel or on the frame under the oven door. On a wall oven, the data plate is on the side of the opening behind the door. All models

About LG oven temperature is wrong

Measure properly before deciding anything

Put an oven thermometer on the middle shelf, set 350°F, and leave it for thirty minutes before reading — not fifteen, and not while it is still preheating. Then read it three times over another half hour. Consistently forty degrees low is calibration and it is adjustable. Swinging from 320 to 400 is the sensor. And an oven that reads correctly on a thermometer is an oven where the problem is the recipe or the pan.

What it usually means, by the kind of LG appliance

LG sells one appliance in several forms — five shapes of washer, three kinds of dryer, four fuels of range — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • Electric range — A drifting sensor is the usual cause, and the offset built into the control panel covers a surprising amount of it.
  • Gas range — Gas ovens cycle more widely by nature. A twenty-degree swing around the set point is normal here and is not a defect.
  • Convection models — If convection bakes evenly and conventional does not, the fan is masking a hot spot rather than the oven being right.

Steady error against swing

An oven that is consistently thirty or forty degrees low is not broken in the usual sense — it is measuring slightly wrong and doing exactly what it is told. That is what the calibration offset in the control menu exists for, and it usually solves the whole complaint without a visit. An oven that swings, on the other hand, is losing its measurement intermittently, and no offset fixes that.

The thing people forget to check

A door. An oven is a box with one deliberately weak side, and a hinge that has dropped a few millimeters over ten years lets a surprising amount of heat out at the top corner. The tell is a cavity that preheats slowly, cooks unevenly front to back, and always seems to need longer than the recipe says — with a sensor that measures perfectly well.

Questions about LG oven temperature is wrong

Everything takes longer than the recipe says.

Measure before assuming. Recipes are written for a nominal 350°F and most ovens are a little off; a real thermometer settles it in half an hour. If the oven measures right, the difference is more likely the pan, the shelf position or a crowded oven than the appliance.

Can I calibrate it myself?

On most LG ovens, yes — there is an offset in the settings menu, usually adjustable by up to about 35°F either way. What is worth doing first is measuring properly, because calibrating against a bad thermometer moves the problem rather than fixing it.
