Symptom

LG washer will not drain

A front loader stopped full of water is the laundry equivalent of the dishwasher call, and it has the same shape: a filter almost nobody knows about, a hose that gets crushed, and a pump that is usually innocent. LG's own troubleshooting order is the right one and it is worth following before booking anything.

  • From $95 diagnostic, credited to the repair
  • 59 cities and neighborhoods covered
  • OEM parts available on order
  • In writing the price, before anything is opened

Four ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Find the filter door at the bottom front

A small hatch, usually on the right. It levers open with a coin.

  2. 02

Run a spin-only cycle and listen

A hum with no flow is a blockage. Silence is the pump or its supply.

  3. 03

    Look behind the machine

The drain hose should rise into a standpipe and not be pushed more than a few inches down it.

  4. 04

    Check the standpipe itself drains

Pour a jug of water down it. If it backs up, that is plumbing rather than appliance.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “There is a pump filter behind a small door at the bottom front”
  • “OE, E03 and E21 are the same condition under three names”
  • “Put a tray down first — there is more water behind that filter than people expect”
A kitchen drawer pulled open on a stack of plain folded paper booklets and a tape measure, the covers blank.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About LG washer will not drain

Empty it before you open anything

There can be several liters behind that filter and it will all arrive at once. Lay towels down, put a shallow baking tray in front of the machine, and if there is a small drain tube beside the filter door, use that first to let the water out slowly. Then unscrew the filter itself, clean it, check the impeller behind it turns freely, and refit it firmly by hand.

What it usually means, by the kind of LG appliance

LG sells one appliance in several forms — five shapes of washer, three kinds of dryer, four fuels of range — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • Front load — The filter door is at the bottom right of the front panel. Some models have a short drain tube beside the filter to empty it first — use it.
  • Top load — No front filter on most of these. The pump is reached from underneath and this is more often a hose or the pump itself.
  • WashTower — The washer half has the same filter as a standalone front loader, at the bottom of the lower machine.

The filter almost nobody opens

Every front-loading washer has a drain pump filter behind a small door at the bottom of the front panel, and its whole purpose is to catch the things that would otherwise destroy the pump. It is meant to be opened by the owner, regularly. In practice most machines we open have never had it out, and what comes out of it is the entire explanation for a machine that will not drain.

Why the water has to come out first

The filter sits below the level of the drum, so everything in the machine is behind it. Unscrewing it with a full drum puts several liters on the floor in about four seconds. LG fits a short drain tube beside the filter on many models exactly for this, and using it turns a flood into a slow trickle into a bowl.

Questions about LG washer will not drain

Can I get the clothes out first?

Usually yes. Power the machine off at the wall for five minutes, which releases most door locks, and try the door. If it still will not open, drain the machine through the filter tube first — the interlock is often refusing because the machine believes there is water inside, which there is.

It drained once I ran it again. Is that fixed?

Probably not fixed, probably shifted. A partial blockage clears itself and comes back, usually within a few weeks and usually at a worse moment. It is worth opening the filter while it is convenient.
