LG frost building up in the freezer

Frost inside a freezer is not a cosmetic problem and it does not stay a small one. A modern cabinet is supposed to melt its own coil clear every few hours; when it stops doing that, the ice grows across the airway until the compartment above it starts to fail. This is the slow failure that people live with for a month and then call about in a hurry.

Four ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

    Look, do not chip

Photograph the frost through the vents. The coil behind it is thin-walled aluminum and a screwdriver ends the repair and starts a replacement.

  2. 02

Check the door seal with a strip of paper

Close the door on it. It should resist being pulled out, all the way round.

  3. 03

Note how fast it comes back

If you defrost it manually, write down the date. Three weeks to a wall of ice is a heater; three months is a gasket.

  4. 04

Look for water under the crispers too

Frost and a leak together mean the trough has iced as well, and that is one visit rather than two.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “A frost-free cabinet with frost has a defrost problem, by definition”
  • “dS is the sensor half of the circuit; the heater is measured rather than read”
  • “Do not chip at it — the coil is aluminum and the tubing is thin”
Four plain unmarked cardboard boxes stacked on a steel shelf in a dim store room, no labels of any kind on them.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About LG frost building up in the freezer

If you are looking up lg freezer has frost, this is the page: frost building up in the freezer, what it usually turns out to be, and the check worth doing before anybody is called out in Miami.

What frost actually means here

This cabinet defrosts itself on a schedule: a heater warms the evaporator, the ice melts, the water runs down a trough into a pan, and cooling resumes. Three things can break that — the heater, the sensor that decides when to run it, and the control that starts it. LG publishes dS for the sensor, and the other two are measured. What frost never means on a frost-free machine is that it needs manual defrosting: that is treating the symptom and it will be back in three weeks.

What it usually means, by the kind of LG appliance

LG sells one appliance in several forms — five shapes of washer, three kinds of dryer, four fuels of range — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

  • French door — Frost usually appears first around the vents at the top of the drawer, because that is where the air has to leave.
  • Side-by-side — The back panel of the freezer side ices from the bottom up. By the time it is visible through the vents there is a great deal behind them.
  • Bottom freezer — The trough under the evaporator ices first and the drain blocks with it, which is why frost and a leak so often arrive together on this layout.

Why a frost-free freezer frosts

Every freezer makes frost — moist air enters every time the door opens and condenses on the coldest surface, which is the evaporator. What makes a cabinet frost-free is not that this stops happening, but that the machine melts it off on a schedule. A heater warms the coil for a few minutes, the water runs away, and cooling starts again. So frost you can see means that cycle has stopped, and the question is only which part of it.

Miami makes it faster

The amount of water in the air here is not a detail. A freezer door opened twenty times on a July evening admits far more moisture than the same door in a dry climate, and a marginal defrost circuit that would limp along elsewhere fails visibly here. It is also why a gasket that has gone slightly hard produces a wall of ice on this coast and merely a poor seal somewhere else.

Questions about LG frost building up in the freezer

Can I just defrost it myself and carry on?

You can, and it will work for a few weeks. Unplug it, take the food out, leave the doors open with towels down and let it melt on its own. What it does not do is fix anything, and each cycle of icing and melting leaves the coil a little worse. If it comes back quickly, that is your answer about whether it needs a visit.

There is frost on the food but not on the walls.

That is a different thing and it is usually normal — freezer burn on poorly wrapped food, or a compartment where air is moving well across an item that is not sealed. Frost on the food with clear walls is a packaging question. Frost on the walls and the vents is the machine.
