LG gas dryer igniter replacement

On a gas dryer the igniter is the part that fails, far more often than the valve. It weakens over years until it no longer draws enough current to open the gas valve — and it will still glow while doing that, which is why 'it glows so it must be fine' is the most common wrong conclusion in this repair.

On the visit

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

    Watch a full ignition attempt

Glow, then flame within about a minute. A glow that fades with no flame is the diagnosis.

  2. 02

    Measure the current draw

This is what actually opens the valve, and it is the only honest test.

  3. 03

    Check the flame sensor

It produces a nearly identical symptom and costs a fraction as much.

  4. 04

Replace and test through several cycles

Ignition failures are often intermittent when the part is on its way out.

  5. 05

    Leak-test the connection

Every joint disturbed, tested and documented.

    LG dryer repair in Miami

Sixty-eight dryers in the catalog, in three quite different kinds: vented electric, vented gas, and the ventless heat pump machines that condense the water into a drawer instead of pushing it outside. That last group changes what a repair is — there is no duct to blame, and the two things that fail are the condenser block and the drain the water leaves by. LG publishes codes for all of it, including the thermistor set tE1 to tE6 and the drn/OE pair that only exists on a machine with a water container.

    • Vented electric, vented gas, and ventless heat pump machines
    • tE1–tE6 thermistors, nP at the heater, drn/OE on the condensate drain
    • On vented machines the duct is the first suspect and usually the answer

About LG gas dryer igniter replacement

Listen for the rhythm at the start of a cycle

Stand beside a gas dryer for the first two minutes and you can hear the whole sequence. A soft click, then a pause of half a minute while the igniter heats, then a low whoosh as the burner lights. A machine that clicks, pauses, clicks again and never whooshes is telling you the gas is not being released, and on this appliance that is usually the igniter aging rather than the valve. One that lights, runs briefly and drops out over and over is a different part in the same assembly. If you smell gas at any point, leave the room and call the gas company before you call us.

Questions about LG gas dryer igniter replacement

The igniter glows bright orange, so it must be working.

That is the most common wrong conclusion in this repair. It weakens with age and can still glow while drawing too little current to release the gas, which is why it gets measured rather than looked at.

Can a gas dryer be converted to electric?

Not practically. It is a different machine with a different outlet behind it. If the gas line is coming out for other reasons that becomes a replacement conversation, and we will be straight with you about the arithmetic.
