LG direct Drive motor repair

LG bolts the motor straight to the drum, which is why these machines have no belt to fail — and why, when the drive does fail, it is a larger job than a belt would have been. LE and LE1 are the codes. Before the motor is condemned, the obvious causes of a stalled drum are ruled out, because most of them are not the motor.

On the visit

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

    Rule out the load

LG's own first step is to let the machine rest for thirty minutes. A hot motor needs nothing else.

  2. 02

    Turn the drum by hand

Grinding or a hard stop means something is between drum and tub — usually an underwire.

  3. 03

    Measure the stator windings

A motor is tested, not guessed at, and a hall sensor produces the same code far more cheaply.

  4. 04

    Replace what has actually failed

Rotor, stator or sensor. They are three different parts and three different figures.

  5. 05

    Test through a full spin

At full speed, with a real load.

    LG washer repair in Miami

The laundry side of this badge is the busiest on the site, and LG sells more shapes of it than anyone: front load, top load with no agitator, the WashTower with both machines behind one control panel, the all-in-one WashCombo that washes and dries in one drum, and the SideKick pedestal washer that lives under the main machine. Two hundred and twenty-two laundry machines in the catalog between washers and dryers. LG publishes a separate code list for each shape, and the codes do not all mean the same thing across them.

    • Around twenty published codes, and a blinking-light set for machines with no display

About LG direct Drive motor repair

Turn the drum by hand before you believe the code

With the machine off, reach in and spin the drum. It should turn freely for most of a revolution and coast to a stop. If it stops dead, or grinds at one point in the rotation, something is trapped between the drum and the outer tub — a coin, a nail, the wire out of a bra — and that is what stalled the motor rather than the motor itself. If it spins freely and the machine still stops early in the cycle, the drive is being asked about properly. With no belt on this make to fail first, a stalled drum goes straight to the largest laundry repair here, which is why the free check comes first.

Questions about LG direct Drive motor repair

I can hear scraping when the drum turns slowly.

Then something is in the gap, and it is worth finding before another load runs. A metal object at spin speed scores the outer tub and turns a twenty-minute retrieval into a much larger conversation.

Is having no belt actually better?

For nine years out of ten, yes: the belt was the part that went, and these machines simply do not have that visit. The trade is that the repair which does eventually come is a bigger one, which is exactly why everything cheap gets ruled out first.
