LG ice fill tube and heater service

The small white tube that delivers water into the tray ends inside a compartment kept below freezing, and in this climate it grows a plug of ice at the mouth that stops the fill without ever showing a code. Clearing it is short. Replacing the heater that is supposed to stop it happening is not.

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

    Confirm water is arriving

The dispenser first. If that is fine, the supply is fine.

  2. 02

    Thaw the tube

A warm damp cloth rather than boiling water into a plastic housing.

  3. 03

    Find out why it froze

A door held ajar, a failing gasket, or a fan that has stopped feeding the compartment. The ice is the symptom.

  4. 04

    Test the fill tube heater

Where the model has one. It is what keeps the mouth clear and it fails silently.

  5. 05

    Verify a full harvest cycle

Water in, freeze, eject. Anything less is guessing.

    LG refrigerator repair in Miami

Three hundred and forty-seven of them are in LG's US catalog, which makes this the biggest part of what the badge sells and the biggest part of what we are called out for. LG is also the make that tells you most about itself when something goes wrong: the refrigerator carries a published code for the condenser fan, the freezer fan, the refrigerator fan, three separate sensors and the ice maker, and you can force it to show you the last one by holding two buttons. In a South Florida kitchen most of the calls are not the sealed system. They are ice, water, a fan that iced up behind the back wall, or a door that stopped sealing in air that is wet nine months of the year.

LG ice maker repair in Miami

LG does not sell an undercounter ice machine in this country. Its ice makers live inside the refrigerator — in the door, in the freezer compartment, or as the second unit that makes the round Craft Ice — and its accessory catalog carries automatic ice maker kits for cabinets that shipped without one. That is where the calls come from, and LG publishes three codes for it: IF for the ice maker fan, IS for its temperature sensor and It for its motor. Ice is the single most common thing we are asked about on this badge, and it is rarely the ice maker.

    • Ice makers in the door, in the freezer, and the second unit that makes Craft Ice
    • IF, IS and It are published — fan, sensor and motor, each named
    • A filter change and a slow fill line explain most of the no-ice calls

About LG ice fill tube and heater service

Small hollow cubes, then a slab in the bin

The order this happens in is worth knowing, because it lets you catch it early. First the cubes come out undersized and hollow, because the tray is being filled with whatever got past the ice at the mouth of the tube. Then water spills over and freezes into the slab that welds the tray to the bin below it. Then the fill stops altogether and no code appears anywhere, because nothing about this is measured. Clearing it with warm water buys you weeks. If it has come back twice, the heater wrapped around that tube has stopped doing its job and the visit is about the heater rather than the ice.

Questions about LG ice fill tube and heater service

Can I melt it myself?

Warm water from a turkey baster, patiently, with the machine unplugged and a towel underneath. No hair dryer and nothing sharp — the tube is plastic and the tray around it is thinner than it looks.

Why does it keep happening in one house and never in another?

Door openings and humidity. A freezer opened twenty times an evening in August takes in air that condenses on the coldest thing it can find, and the mouth of that tube is often it.
