Symptom
LG range hood not extracting
Before anything is called a failure, one question decides most of these: is the hood ducted to the outside, or is it recirculating through a filter back into the room? A recirculating hood was never going to remove steam. It removes grease and smell, and it does that only while its charcoal filter is fresh.

Four ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Loaded filters
Baffle filters wash. Charcoal ones are replaced. Both stop a working hood.

A recirculating installation
Not a repair at all — a hood doing exactly what it was fitted to do.
Range hood repair from $165 -
A seized damper or vent flap
At the top of an over-the-range microwave, or outside on the wall. Very common on this coast.
Over the range microwave vent service from $155 -
The blower motor or its capacitor
A motor that hums and does not turn is usually the capacitor.

Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Hold paper to the filters on high
It should hold itself there. If it falls, there is no flow.
-
02
Take the filters out and look at them
Hold one up to the light. If you cannot see through it, that is the problem.
-
03
Find out where the air goes
Look on top of the hood or above the microwave for a duct. No duct means recirculating.
-
04
Check the outside vent while it runs
The flap should open. A painted-shut or corroded one never will.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all
On a hood, the data plate is inside the frame. On a drawer, a microwave or a coffee system, the data plate is on the frame of the opening — open it fully and look along the sides. All models

About LG range hood not extracting
Three checks, in order, and two of them are free
First: hold a sheet of kitchen paper against the filters with the fan on high. If it does not hold, there is no suction and the problem is inside. Second: take the baffle filters out and look at them — loaded ones stop a working hood dead, and they go in the dishwasher. Third: go outside and find the vent. If the flap does not move freely when the fan runs, that is your answer and nothing inside the kitchen needs touching.
What it usually means, by the kind of LG appliance
LG sells one appliance in several forms — five shapes of washer, three kinds of dryer, four fuels of range — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.
- Wall chimney hood — Usually ducted, and the run is short. The outside hood is the thing to check.
- Over-the-range microwave — Very often recirculating in this city, because there is no duct in the wall. Check the damper at the top of the machine.
- Under-cabinet — Short duct or recirculating. Both are common and they look identical from the kitchen.
Ducted or recirculating
A ducted hood pushes air out of the building through a pipe. A recirculating one pulls it through a charcoal filter and gives it back to the room. Both are legitimate installations; only the first removes steam and heat. A large share of the calls we take about hoods that do not work turn out to be recirculating installations behaving exactly as designed, usually with a charcoal filter that has been in place since the kitchen was built.
Why LG has no code for this
LG publishes error codes for its refrigerators, dishwashers, washers, dryers and cooking ranges. It publishes none for range hoods, and that is not an oversight on our part — a hood is a motor, a switch, two lamps and a duct, and there is nothing in it that reports. So on this appliance the symptom page is the whole archive, and everything below is diagnosis rather than translation.

Questions about LG range hood not extracting
How often should the filters be done?
Baffle filters every month or two in a kitchen that actually cooks, and they go through the dishwasher on their own. Charcoal filters on a recirculating hood roughly every six months, and they cannot be washed — they are replaced. Nothing else on this appliance repays attention as cheaply.
Can a recirculating hood be converted to ducted?
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the building. In a house with an exterior wall behind the cooktop it is often straightforward. In a condo tower it is usually not possible at all, which is why so many kitchens here recirculate. We will tell you which you are looking at rather than quoting for work that cannot be done.
