# LG fridge warm and freezer cold

### What the freezer is telling you

Do not skip past the good news. If the freezer is holding at or below 0°F, the compressor is running, the refrigerant is where it should be and the condenser is shedding heat — which rules out every expensive repair on the list before anybody opens a toolbag. What is left is the path the cold takes into the fresh food compartment: a damper, a duct, a fan, or an evaporator that has iced enough to block the air but not enough to stop the freezer.

### What it usually means, by the kind of LG appliance

LG sells one appliance in several forms — five shapes of washer, three kinds of dryer, four fuels of range — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

- **French door** — The damper is usually in the back wall of the fresh food compartment behind a cover. A damper stuck shut gives exactly this and nothing else.
- **Side-by-side** — The longest air path of any layout, so this is the cabinet where a partly iced evaporator shows as a warm fridge first and a soft freezer much later.
- **Bottom freezer** — Look for frost around the vents at the top of the freezer drawer — that is where the air has to leave from to reach the compartment above.

### One system, two compartments, one flap

Most LG refrigerators make cold in one place and divide it. The evaporator sits behind the back wall of the freezer, a fan moves air across it, and a damper — a motorized flap — meters how much of that air goes up into the fresh food compartment. That design is why this symptom is so common and why it is so often cheap: there are three or four things in the path and none of them is the compressor.

### The version that is not cheap

An evaporator that has been slowly icing for a month will block the duct long before it stops the freezer, so a fresh food compartment that is drifting warm can be the first visible sign of a defrost circuit that stopped working weeks ago. The tell is frost you can see through the freezer vents and a freezer that has started running noticeably longer. That one is a real repair, and leaving it does not make it smaller.

The fresh food fan

On cabinets that cool each side separately, the refrigerator has a fan of its own and rF is the code for it.

A damper stuck closed

The flap that meters cold from the freezer into the fridge. Mechanical, cheap, and invisible from outside.

An evaporator partly sealed in ice

Enough frost to block the duct and not enough to stop the freezer. The classic slow defrost failure.

Vents buried under food

The cheapest cause on the list and a real one. Cold cannot get past a stack of containers pushed to the back wall.

Measure both, do not judge by hand

A thermometer in each compartment for an hour. 'Cold' and 'not cold' are not numbers and this problem is about the gap between two numbers.

Feel for air at the fresh food vents

Hold a strip of tissue to the vent in the back wall. If it does not lift, nothing is arriving and that is the finding.

Clear the back wall and wait a day

Move everything six inches off the back of both compartments and give it twenty-four hours before deciding anything.

Read the code prefix

On a two-evaporator cabinet, F and r in front of the same code mean different coils. Write down exactly what is shown.

One compartment is right and the other is not

What it usually means

A hard freezer proves the sealed system is fine, which removes the expensive answer

Air, damper, or the fan feeding the fresh food side

On a two-evaporator cabinet, the code prefix says which coil is involved

### Can I just turn the fridge temperature down?

It rarely helps and it often makes things worse. If the cold is not arriving, asking for more of it just runs the freezer colder and freezes whatever is nearest the vent in the fresh food side. You end up with frozen lettuce and warm milk in the same compartment.

### The freezer is fine but ice production has dropped too.

That points back at air rather than at the ice maker. The ice maker needs cold delivered to it as much as the fresh food side does, and on the door-mounted ice makers LG gives that its own fan and its own code, IF.
