# LG dishwasher not cleaning

### Load it differently before you change anything else

Put big items down the sides rather than across the middle, face everything towards the center, and check nothing tall is blocking an arm — spin both arms by hand with the racks in and see what they hit. Then fill the rinse aid. Those two together fix a great many machines that people are about to replace, and neither costs anything.

### What it usually means, by the kind of LG appliance

LG sells one appliance in several forms — five shapes of washer, three kinds of dryer, four fuels of range — and the same behavior points at different things on each of them. A built-in side-by-side and an integrated column are not the same service situation, and a dual-fuel range and an induction range fail in different halves.

- **QuadWash** — Arms that move in two directions. If one rack cleans and the other does not, the diverter that switches between them is the suspect — nE on the display.
- **TrueSteam** — The steam stage runs before the main wash. A machine with a heater problem loses that first and the symptom is poor cleaning on baked-on food specifically.
- **Third rack** — Cutlery lying flat across the top rack blocks the spray to everything below it if it is overloaded.

### Two complaints, one sentence

‘It is not cleaning’ covers two entirely different machines. One leaves food behind: that is mechanical — spray, pressure, heat, filter. The other returns everything clean but coated in a dull white film: that is chemistry, and the chemistry belongs to the water supply rather than the appliance. Telling them apart takes one look at a plate and it changes the whole visit.

### What rinse aid actually does

It is not a cleaning product. It breaks the surface tension of the final rinse so the water runs off in sheets instead of beading, which means less water left to dry into spots and far better drying overall. In a hard-water city it does more for the look of your dishes than any detergent will, and a machine with an empty reservoir gets blamed for a great deal it is not doing.

Loading and blocked spray arms

The most common cause of poor cleaning on any make, and the one nobody wants to hear.

A loaded filter

Dirty water goes back through the machine. Cleaning suffers before draining does.

Hard water and no rinse aid

The chalky film specifically. Not a machine problem and not fixed by a repair.

HE on the display. Water that never reaches temperature cannot dissolve fat, and the plates show it.

The diverter or wash motor

nE or LE. One rack clean and one dirty is close to a diagnosis on its own.

Spin both spray arms by hand

With the racks loaded as you normally load them. Anything they touch is the problem.

Check the rinse aid reservoir

Empty is normal in a house that has never filled it, and it is most of the film.

Feel the door at the end of a cycle

A machine that has heated properly is genuinely hot inside. A cool tub points at the heater.

Run the hot tap at the sink first

The machine fills with whatever is in the pipe. Thirty seconds of running the tap gives it a hot start.

Dried food still on the plates, or a chalky film

What it usually means

Food left on is spray, filter or heat; a chalky film is water

Rinse aid does the work most people expect detergent to do

Loading matters more than any setting on the panel

### Should I rinse the dishes first?

Scrape, do not rinse. Modern detergents need something to work on and a completely pre-rinsed load can actually come out worse, because the enzymes have nothing to bind to. Get the solids off, leave the rest to the machine.

### The glasses have gone permanently cloudy.

If a drop of white vinegar on the glass clears it, that is hard water deposit and it comes off. If it does not clear, that is etching — the glass surface itself has been attacked, usually by very hot cycles with soft water and too much detergent — and it is permanent. Worth knowing before anybody replaces a machine over it.
