### A smoke test and a strip of tissue

Hold a strip of tissue paper up under the edge of the hood with the fan on high: it should be pulled flat and held there. Then boil a pan of water underneath and watch whether the steam is carried away or rolls out into the room. Those two tests separate a hood that has lost suction from one that never had the reach for the cooktop below it. Grease-clogged mesh filters are the commonest answer, and a motor that hums without turning is nearly always the capacitor rather than the motor.

### How often do the metal filters need doing?

Monthly for anyone who fries regularly, every couple of months otherwise. A hot dishwasher cycle without an overload of detergent, and dry them fully before they go back.
