# LG over the range microwave vent service

### First find out whether it vents outside at all

Go outside and look at the wall behind the range, or up at the roof. If there is no hood out there, your machine is recirculating: the air goes through a charcoal filter and straight back into the kitchen, which deals with smoke and smell and does almost nothing about heat and steam. That is not a broken appliance, it is how it was fitted, and it explains most of the complaints we hear about these. A recirculating machine also has its blower turned a different way and needs that charcoal filter changed twice a year, a job which has usually never been done once.

Establish where the air goes

A duct above the machine, or a grille that returns it to the room. Both are legitimate.

Check and replace the filters

Grease filters wash; charcoal filters do not.

Free the damper

The flap at the top of the machine, and the one at the wall hood outside.

Test the blower

A motor that hums and does not turn is usually its capacitor.

Measure the flow at the hood

Outside, with the fan running.

### Can a recirculating one be ducted properly?

Sometimes, and it depends entirely on what is above and behind the cabinet. It is a real piece of work rather than a setting, and we will tell you honestly what is possible in your kitchen before anyone starts.

### It rattles at high speed.

Usually the damper, the flap that opens under air pressure. It gets sticky with cooking grease and then chatters against its frame. Cleaning it is often the whole repair.
