# LG refrigerators

### Four cabinet layouts, and a compressor LG argues about

LG’s US catalog carries 347 refrigerators. French door is the bulk of it, in three- and four-door forms; side-by-side, top freezer and bottom freezer fill in the rest, and InstaView — the panel that lights up when you knock on it — runs across the top of the range. The argument LG makes for itself is the compressor: a linear or inverter linear unit rather than a reciprocating one, sold on a long parts warranty. It is a real difference and it changes what a repair looks like, because a linear compressor failure is a sealed-system job with a warranty conversation attached rather than a straight swap.

### What the codes actually cover

This is one of the best-documented refrigerators sold in this country. LG names the failure for the machine-room fan, the freezer fan, the refrigerator fan, the freezer sensor, the refrigerator sensor, the defrost sensor, the ambient sensor, the ice maker fan, the ice maker sensor, the ice maker motor and the water tank, each with its own two-letter code and its own published meaning. On a cabinet with two evaporators the prefix — Er, F or r — says which compartment is being reported. That is more than most makes publish, and it is why a first visit here starts with the code rather than with the toolbag.

What the codes actually cover

This is one of the best-documented refrigerators sold in this country. LG names the failure for the machine-room fan, the freezer fan, the refrigerator fan, the freezer sensor, the refrigerator sensor, the defrost sensor, the ambient sensor, the ice maker fan, the ice maker sensor, the ice maker motor and the water tank, each with its own two-letter code and its own published meaning. On a cabinet with two evaporators the prefix — Er, F or r — says which compartment is being reported. ### It is running but it is not cold enough. Where does that usually end up?

Air before refrigerant, and on this make that is not a way of saying nothing. LG publishes three separate fan codes — CF for the condenser fan in the machine room, FF for the freezer fan and rF for the refrigerator fan — and its own explanation for each of them is a fan the machine has detected as blocked, with the compressor then overworking and the cabinet slowly losing ground. A freezer packed to the back wall does the same thing and shows no code at all. After air comes defrost, which reads as one compartment getting warmer over days while the other stays right, and which LG codes as dS when the sensor itself is the problem. The sealed system is real, it is last, and it is measured rather than guessed at.

### How do I get it to show me the code?

Press and hold Freezer Temperature and Express Frz together for at least three seconds. LG documents this, and it matters after a power cut, because the display clears on its own and the failure does not. Write down exactly what you see, including the letter in front — LG uses E, r and Er as prefixes and on a two-evaporator cabinet the prefix is the part that says which side of the machine is being complained about.

### Is the ten-year compressor warranty worth anything on a call like this?

Often, and it is worth checking before anybody quotes you. LG's linear compressors carry a long parts warranty and the paperwork follows the machine rather than the owner, so a cabinet bought used can still be covered. What the warranty does not cover is the labor, the gas or the drier, which is why a sealed-system quote on a covered machine still has a real number on it. We say which part of the bill the warranty takes before the work starts.

### Does the humidity here actually change anything?

Yes, and it shows up in the same three places every summer. Door gaskets give up earlier, so the cabinet runs longer and ices its own evaporator. Defrost drains block sooner, and the water arrives under the crisper rather than on the floor where you would see it. And an ice maker in a house where the door opens twenty times an evening spends its life recovering. None of that is a failure in the machine. It is what this climate does to a machine that is working.
