# LG microwaves

### Three places a microwave lives

On the counter, above the range, or built into a cabinet — including as the upper half of an LG combination wall oven. The over-the-range machines are the ones this trade sees most, and they are two appliances in one housing: a microwave and the kitchen’s ventilation. Half the complaints about them are ventilation complaints.

### What is worth repairing

Anything built in, and most things over-the-range, because the value is in the installation as much as the machine. A countertop machine with a failed magnetron is a different conversation and we will have it plainly. What is never a wait-and-see is a door interlock: a microwave that can run with its door unlatched is unplugged today, not next week.

Over-the-range, countertop, built-in, and the cavity in a combi wall oven

The over-the-range machines are also the ventilation, and are serviced as both

A machine that runs and does not heat is a specific failure, not a vague one

Three places a microwave lives

On the counter, above the range, or built into a cabinet — including as the upper half of an LG combination wall oven. The over-the-range machines are the ones this trade sees most, and they are two appliances in one housing: a microwave and the kitchen’s ventilation. Half the complaints about them are ventilation complaints.

What is worth repairing

Anything built in, and most things over-the-range, because the value is in the installation as much as the machine. A countertop machine with a failed magnetron is a different conversation and we will have it plainly. What is never a wait-and-see is a door interlock: a microwave that can run with its door unlatched is unplugged today, not next week.

### It runs, the light is on, the plate turns — and nothing gets hot.

That is a specific failure rather than a vague one, and it is the magnetron circuit: the magnetron itself, the high-voltage diode, the capacitor or the transformer. There is an honest conversation to have about it before the work, because on a countertop machine the parts and the labor together are often most of a new one, while on a built-in or an over-the-range unit — where the cabinet, the trim kit and the ventilation are part of what you paid for — repairing it is usually the right answer.

### It starts by itself when I close the door.

Stop using it and unplug it. That is a failed door interlock, and it means the switch that is supposed to prove the door is shut before the machine can run has stuck closed. It is a small, cheap part and it is a safety part, and a microwave that can start with the door in any state is not one to keep on the counter while you think about it.

### The kitchen fills with steam even with the fan on.

Then it is almost certainly recirculating rather than venting. An over-the-range machine can be installed either way, and a great many in this city are set to recirculate — through a charcoal filter, back into the room — either because there is no duct or because nobody changed the setting when there was. Filters are cheap and get forgotten; the damper flap above the machine seizes and is worth checking at the same time.
